Watermelons = AWESOME
by Samuel Cheng (4F)
A lot of people like watermelons for obvious reasons: they are cool and yummy as a start! I like to eat them whenever I can but particularly in summer when it’s hot and I need to cool down.
Here are 5 of my favourite fun facts about watermelons:
Watermelon contains 6% sugar.
But the sugar is natural, so it’s not that bad. Just make sure you don’t eat the whole thing at once!
The heaviest watermelon weighed 350.5 lbs and was grown in 2013.
Some watermelons are ginormous! This one was a monster. I bet it took a whole class to eat it.
There are over 1,200 types of watermelons.
We’re all familiar with red watermelons. But did you know there is more than one type?
Watermelons are made up of 92% water.
Watermelons are very watery (duh!). They melt in your mouth and can be very refreshing.
All of the watermelon (including the rind) can be eaten.
Although most of us don’t eat the rind, the entire watermelon can be digested in our stomach — even the seeds!
Watermelons have lots of vitamins, like Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin C. These help your skin stay soft and smooth.
A fun fact is watermelons are originally from Africa. But nowadays, almost every country — including Turkey and China — grow watermelons. I want to try one from each continent!
