Music Review: The Wonder of MIRROR
by Evania Cheung (5E)
Over the past few years, Korean culture has swept Hong Kong and many countries in the world. People, especially teenagers, are crazy about their Korean idols, like BTS and BLACKPINK, and they even learn to dance K-pop and sing K-pop songs.
However, in recent years, almost all the conversations among our friends in Hong Kong are about MIRROR. Some teenagers even gave up their Korean idols and switched to MIRROR.
Who is MIRROR? Why are they so popular? If you haven’t been paying attention to MIRROR, now is the time.
MIRROR is currently the biggest Cantopop boy band in Hong Kong. There are 12 members, including Lokman, Anson Kong, Anson Lo, Edan, Ian, Jeremy, Frankie, Stanley, Jer, Tiger, Alton and Keung To. They were the participants of the ‘Good Night Show-King Maker, Season One’. It is a reality competition show of the Hong Kong Broadcasting ViuTV, and MIRROR was formed after the competition. They debuted on 3rd November, 2018 and released their first song ‘In a second’(一秒間) on 25th November, 2018.
Their popular songs are ‘Ignited’ and ‘Warrior’, which have been their biggest hits so far. They released a new song on 9th June 2021, called ‘Boss’, which has already got more than 4 million views on YouTube.
Apart from dancing and singing, many members also acted in many different TV commercials, TV series, movies, and various shows, for example ‘Ossan’s Love’, starring Edan, Anson Lo and Stanley. Anson Lo also acted in a movie titled ‘Showbiz Spy’, which will be shown on 25th November this year.
The band members are adored by millions of fans not only in Asia, but all around the world. For the most handsome one, Keung To’s 22nd birthday, his fans crowdfunded money to cover a tram with birthday greetings and photos of him. Anson Lo’s fans also decorated the huge board by the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and covered a bus with birthday greetings, which attracted their fans to take photos with, and this huge board has become an icon of the ferry pier in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Not only MIRROR attracts local fans, but also overseas fans. There are numerous fan groups on Facebook and Instagram, and I am a member in one of them, reading and sharing the news about the twelve boys.
Among the twelve, my favourite idols are Anson Lo and Edan because I appreciate their singing and dancing. Are you a big fan of them like me? If not, who is your favourite one? Come and join us too!
