Homework Absence.

by Jacob Lee (5D)

Have you ever been in a situation where you forgot your homework at home? Or have you ever forgotten to do it in the first place? We decided to get to the bottom of the issue and ask students and parents what could and should be done to those students. Recently, we polled some students at Pui Ching who missed homework and found that 75% of them think that missed homework should be punishable. But what is an appropriate punishment?

One student said, "Absence of homework should be punished because if you don't do that the people who didn’t submit their homework will continue not handing it which is bad for the school's image." But another student disagreed: “Not handing in homework shouldn't be punishable because nobody wants their parents to know about that fact.”

I side with the first interviewee, because if you don’t punish them they will not think it’s wrong and will not hand in their homework on time.

I also had the chance to talk to my parents about missed homework. Here’s what they had to say:

Me: What do you think about missed homework punishments?

My Mother: I think missed homework punishments are fair.

Me: Why do you think it's fair?

My Mother: Because if we don't punish them, everyone will miss their homework which will cause the whole class to slow down.

Me: What do you think about missed homework punishments?

My Dad: Depends…we need to understand the reasons for not handing in the homework on time.

Me: What if someone forgets to write the student’s handbook?

My Dad: Well, then that shouldn’t be punishable if that was the first time, but if that’s a repetitive mistake, then it should be punishable.

Like with any topic, there are always many different opinions. To keep the discussion going, who do you agree with? Let me know, Jacob @ Pui Ching Gazette.
