The Mind's Eye: Story Assignments
In our second lesson, we teach the children to use the Mind’s Eye, the imagined picture inside our heads when we read a story, as a writing tool. As writers, we can use the Mind’s Eye like a camera, writing description from left to right or up to down, and move the reader’s Mind’s Eye so they can easily picture what’s happening.
Here are 4 students’ stories using the following picture prompt:
Jake decided to climb Kowloon Peak-one of the most beautiful cliffs of Hong Kong. He got all of his climbing gear and headed towards the cliff. At the starting point, he held his head up and started climbing…
When he reached the top, the sun was setting, he set up all his camping gear and sat near the edge admiring the beautiful view of Hong Kong. He closed his eyes and the noise of the city slowly disappeared with the sound of birds chirping, the fresh mountain air expanding hismy lungs, his heartbeat slowing down… The towering buildings and the sparkling twilight highlighting the golden vein flowing through the body of Hong Kong leading to the heart of the city…
Jake used the sight of millions of people working hard, moving like blood in the veins and powering the heart of the city to motivate him.
After the week passed, Jake went back to work, empowered by the city, determined to power the blood of Hong Kong, working harder than ever before.
While climbing, he did not look down since he still had fears from his accident when he fell off a cliff. Keyen climbed and climbed but he felt like he never went any higher since Jimin Mountain, one of the highest mountains in the USA, finally got to the first safe spot. Keyen still had a long way to go and he wanted to get up there before sunrise.
Suddenly, one of his bandages fell off his hand, he had a very high chance of falling to death because there weren’t any safety belts on the mountain. He held on and it was a few minutes away until sunrise and Keyen was only half way there. While looking back down, he felt like he was floating but he luckily didn’t let go of his hand.
At last, Keyen was only about 7 meters away from the top of the mountain and he got up 5 minutes before sunrise, he set up his tent and he waited for the sunrise, the view was amazing. Looking down at the city roads, they looked like a long golden rope going down all across the USA, he finally felt peace and safety.
