Drama Club 23-24

It’s been a busy year for the Drama Club.

This year’s play is “The Knights of the Round Table”, adapted from a children’s story about three best friends who accidentally time travel to Medieval England, helping the legendary King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and the Knights of the Round Table to battle a giant and find their way home!

This play features theatrics that haven’t been done before in our school dramas, including a magic trick, sword fights, and special effects.

The students who were knights had to train in stage combat, learning how to sword fight on stage and make it look convincing.

The special effect involved turning P4 student Noah Zhu into a giant. Noah was shot in front of a blue screen beforehand and later projected onto the big screen on stage. The actors then had to act and fight with the recording of the giant live on stage with exact timing.

The show was a hit, winning multiple awards at this year’s Hong Kong School Drama Festival, including Outstanding Performer for Charlotte Lo Ying Yiu, Outstanding Director Awards for Mr. Lam and Mr. Ng, Outstanding Stage Effects, Outstanding Cooperation and the Adjudicator’s Award, which awarded the students the top honor of performing the play again for the public.

The Hong Kong School Drama Festival Public Performance was on 1st May at Ko Shan Theatre in Hung Hom. We were the first of four school plays on the lineup.

As we were in the middle of shooting our short film for Filmit, there was no extra rehearsal time in school and the students only had 2 hours of rehearsal time on the Ko Shan Theatre stage on the day and learned to project their voices live to the audience.

One of the highlights of the night was when we asked the
Giant a riddle and the actors turn to the audience to guess the riddle. P6 student Coco Chan hosted this session and patiently warmed the quiet audience into raising their hands and offering 3 guesses.
