Drama Club 22-23

This year’s Drama Club students performed The Friend of Frankenstein, an original comedy musical scripted and composed by Pui Ching teachers, in front of a live audience, bringing this long journey to a satisfying close.

Genius scientist Victor Frankenstein has no friends. Nobody in his hometown of Wissenschaft likes him. Victor asks to join the Genius’ Club along with famous Victorian scientists Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo and The Invisible Man, but is rejected because he hasn’t made any worthy scientific achievements. Angry and determined, Victor sets out to create a friend of his own through science!

The Friend of Frankenstein is the most ambitious production in Drama Club yet. The production started in mid-2018 and has been delayed for a few years by COVID-19. 4 Styrofoam set walls on wheels, representing the Wissenschaft town and Victor’s laboratory, were handmade and 10 songs were recorded from scratch in studio by the teachers using musical instruments from the school orchestra.

Due to COVID-19, the original cast of students from 2019-2020 were unable to perform. The second cast of students in 2022-2023 were only able to perform the play as Reader’s Theater via Zoom as part of the Hong Kong School Drama Festival.

The 2022-2023 Drama Club is the show’s third cast and the only one to perform it live for an audience at the School Variety Show.
