Drama Club 21-22
This year’s Drama Club students performed The Friend of Frankenstein, an original comedy musical, via Zoom as part of the Hong Kong School Drama Festival.
Genius scientist Victor Frankenstein has no friends. Nobody in his hometown of Wissenschaft likes him. Victor asks to join the Genius’ Club along with famous Victorian scientists Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo and The Invisible Man, but is rejected because he hasn’t made any worthy scientific achievements. Angry and determined, Victor sets out to create a friend of his own through science!
It’s been a challenging year for the students. Due to COVID-19, onstage rehearsals had to be shifted to online rehearsals in the middle and the Drama Club members performed the play Reader’s Theater style via Zoom as part of the Hong Kong School Drama Festival.
Due to the technical difficulties of Zoom, the students were unable to sing the songs as only one person could speak at a time and there was no sync sound music to score in the background. Despite this, all the students rose to the challenge and gave a satisfying dramatic reading of the play to the judges.
The Friend of Frankenstein won for 4 awards categories. Samantha Siu Yu Lam (Victor Frankenstein), Curtis Chan Sin Long (Igor), Ernest Chiang Yat Chun (The Creature) and Curtis Tin Chi Yau (Mayor Wolff) won the Outstanding Performer Awards. The Award for Outstanding Script and Outstanding Director was awarded to Mr. Steven Ng.
With all the awards recognition, the Drama Club is still determined to do a production of our comedy musical on stage in front of a live audience. We look forward to putting it on stage next year! Fingers crossed!
