Superheroes: Favorites and Backgrounds

By Tsoi Ting Hang Duncan

Many superheroes exist in the world, both fictional and real. I asked my friends about their favorite superheroes, and the results were interesting: 5% chose Batman, 10% preferred Deadpool, 15% picked Ant-Man, while 35% favored Iron Man and another 35% chose Spider-Man. Today, I’ll share two heroes’ backgrounds and abilities, starting with Iron Man.

Iron Man

Iron Man, also known as Tony Stark, is from the Marvel Universe. Many people admire Iron Man for his cool demeanor and immense wealth. However, not everyone knows that he built his first suit of armor to escape captivity from the Ten Rings, a secret society.

The armor Stark created while in prison was limited due to a lack of quality materials. The Ten Rings offered him freedom in exchange for building a Jericho missile, but Stark and fellow prisoner Yinsen suspected that Raza, the leader, would not honor the deal. Together, they secretly built a powerful electric generator called an arc reactor to power Stark's electromagnet and construct a prototype armored suit for their escape.

When the Ten Rings discovered their plan, they attacked the workshop. Yinsen sacrificed himself to buy time for Stark. Stark's wealth comes from his father, allowing him to inherit a fortune. Iron Man collaborates with heroes like Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Hulk. I hope you’ve learned more about the amazing Iron Man!

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is beloved by many children, with merchandise featuring him found worldwide. His real name is Peter Benjamin Parker. After losing his parents in a plane crash, he was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City.

Peter gained his powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, which granted him superhuman strength, speed, agility, and reflexes. Initially, he used his powers for personal gain, but after the tragic death of his uncle at the hands of a thief, he vowed to fight crime and become Spider-Man.

Spider-Man has several allies, including Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman, Miles Morales, and Peni Parker. His arch-enemies are Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin, with whom he has had intense battles. You can find Spider-Man in numerous comics and movies, and I hope you enjoy exploring his adventures!
