There have been thousands of films since the first film produced in 1895.

In my humble movie-watching opinion, here are the five best classic Hollywood movies.

What makes a movie a “classic”? In this opinion piece, I define a classic based on its sheer cultural influence. Let’s take a look!

Back To The Future

“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!”

This film inspired so many time-travel based movies that couldn't not make the list. My father first showed me the film a few years back, and although it is an old film, it still knocked my socks off!

It has hilarious characters and clever dialogue... keeping you on the edge of your seat as you begin to consider the complexities of time travel and the complications that can come with it. It's a must-watch!

Forrest Gump

“My momma always said life is like a box of chocolates.”

Forrest Gump is a wholesome story full of relatable characters and warm life lessons. It follows the life of a man who has a low IQ, as he describes his life experiences to people sitting next to him in a park. He meets very important people through his life and reflects on some rather marvellous and wacky events. This funny and touching film had to make the list!

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark

“I hate snakes, Jock. I hate them!”

If you want an epic, whizz-bang, exciting adventure movie, this is just the right thing for you! Raiders of the Lost Ark has an amazing plot that went on to inspire many scenes and scripts of other feature films. I personally really love it because I’ve watched it with my dad plenty of times… Our favorite part is when Jones escapes the boulder; nerve wracking!

Star Wars: A New Hope

“May the Force be with you.”

In a galaxy far far away, there was a movie franchise—Star Wars! This time, we are talking about the first and original movie that started it all, A New Hope. The feature film is full of culturally significant moments, my favourite being the Death Star blowing up.

Decades have passed and entire generations still adore the franchise. The great George Lucas directed a truly honourable movie franchise which won over the hearts of millions.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

“Hasta La Vista Baby!”

This science-fiction classic by James Cameron was produced in 1991. It's a sci-fi action movie with a very original plot and Arnold Schwarzenegger puts in a spectacular performance.

Honourable Mentions (these cult-classics are too amazing to not be listed):

The Shining (1980)

Ghostbusters (1984)

Alien (1979)

The Godfather (1972)

Even though this is a short list of five Hollywood classics, you don't need to stop there. In fact it might be quite difficult to stop watching great movies like these! I hope that this list inspires you to find these films and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
