This short story was written for the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals “Good People, Good Deeds: English Writing Competition 2023-24. This year’s theme was “Good People, Good Deeds”. Students wrote stories about kindness, helping strangers and/or friends.

Help a valuable life? Help a disabled person? Whatever you do, it is heartwarming to the people you helped and more…

One beautiful morning, Lily went to the mountains. It was boiling hot. The sun was shining and fresh air was everywhere. Lily walked past hundreds of trees slowly, she felt distressed and sat on the rocks to have a break.

Suddenly, she heard sounds coming from the water drain. Curiously, Lily went to see where the sound came from. It was an animal shouting for help. At that moment, nobody knew what animal it was… Lily pulled out the cover and looked closer.

“Oh no ! It may be bleeding!” Lily said.

She walked away thinking ‘That dog does look disgusting. Wait! Maybe it needs help. It needs a second chance in life! No, it may have germs..” Lily starts feeling regret .” but the dog really needs a second chance in life. I got a blanket. Maybe I should cover it in it and call the animal rescue team! Yeah!”

Not long after, the rescue team arrived. They had caught all the materials and took the dog out.’ It was really disgusting,’ said Lily. They started to take the dog to the rescue car. The dog was almost fainting!

As fast as a cheetah, they ran to the animal hospital. They skipped all the lines and went to see the vet. The dog kept trying his best to bark ! Lilly was scared.

’Will the dog have a second chance for life ?’said Lilly,

The results : the dog only has 0.5 chance to survive. The dog has skin disease and has a baby in her tummy. The puppy will have a new life, if the dog has surgery to repair cuts on the skin. Is that okay?

No chance, the dog has to do the surgery for the puppy. Two days in the hospital were long and tiring for animals . That night was tough. Lily can’t sleep. How is the dog doing? Will she be okay? This question was bothering Lily.

Two days passed and it was only a few hours before the dog could see Lilly. The nervousness came to Lily !At the hospital, Lilly was thankful to see the dog! To make a difference, the dog was named ‘Brave' ! The puppies were strong and healthy

After a few years, the dog was clever and friendly! It has become a popular therapy dog for making elderly happy and relaxed ! Where were the cubes? Brave’s puppies were training to be a police dog!

Breaking news; the dog, Brave, made a sad elderly man come out of sadness and found happiness in life! Brave, had a fun time with him.’ Every animal could have a second chance to live!’ said Lilly ,the dog's owner .

Lilly had saved the valuable lives of an animal from a water drain, dogs who turned out to be helpful and perfect dogs ! It wasn’t an easy task In life, we have to persist like Lily does!
