The Playground
The Creative Writing students were asked to write a description of a playground with two emotions. They were given the following image, a teddy bear in a suitcase, and assigned a particular emotion. Here were some of the highlights.

Energetic
I came here every day with my mother,
And I slide down from the slide,
I swing in the swings without a bother,
And each time I smile with pride.
I saw children playing freely,
And I graciously join the gang,
The wind was rather breezy,
And it shakes my curly bangs.
I was running around and around I go
As I past the merry-go-around,
I ran so fast that the children go “whoa”,
They were impressed by the swooshing sound.
It was late evening now,
And I hold to my mother’s hand,
As I say goodbye to this playground,
I pictured a warm and lively background.
Lonely
I walk up to this place,
Which reminds me of my childhood,
I see the birds dancing in grace,
And now that I am in adulthood.
Drops of pure water fall from the dark sky,
Drip, drop it said gently to the breeze,
I saw the birds stretch their wings and fly,
And the chilly wind swooshed, I shivered and froze.
The slides were now soulless,
And so as the swings,
The see-saw was now heartless,
And so as another few things.
I pictured a beautiful background,
Of children playing without a single groan,
But now all that left is this empty playground,
And here I’m standing all alone.

Irritated
Tom was walking while dipping his head through the slides while the snow fell onto his jacket. Stamping his feet, he gazed at the sky and found it dark and cloudy. His hair was scattered by the wind. Some of the children were running arrogantly, while the others were screaming. The image of being accused wrongly by his boss popped up into his mind.
Calm
Tom was walking to the slides while the snow patted his jacket gently. He lifted his head, the sunlight was glorious and warm. The breeze blew and the trees nearby danced silently. Everything was so gracious. Some of the children were chasing each other, while the others were chatting. All of them were having great fun and they were giggling from ear to ear!

Lonely and Energetic
Last month, I went to a playground with my friend, Tom. I ran around and was overjoyed. On the other side, Tom slowly walked to the tree and sat underneath it. “Why are you sitting there? I thought you were happy to come here,” I asked confused. He didn’t say a word and ignored me. I thought that he was depressed or something so I didn’t care about him.
In the playground, there were lots of things to play with. I quickly ran to the slides and started playing. I thought that I could play with all the things. Tom just looked at me, I had a very strange feeling that he doesn’t want to play with me. I walked to him and said, “You know, I would really like you to play with me.” He didn’t talk and stared at me.
I didn’t know what to do. Is it that he doesn’t want to play with me anymore? Is it that I am a bad friend? Those questions started coming into my mind. I felt horrible and looked at my muddy shoes.
“Really? You would like to play with me?” he asked. I looked at him as I nodded my head.
After all the talking, he started playing with me. I knew I wasn’t a bad friend.
