"A Snapshot of Life in Hong Kong" Poem Collection

As the final project of this year’s Poetry Unit, the Creative Writing students were tasked to write a poem that capture a little picture of what it is like to live in Hong Kong. Students had to combine all their writing skills from the Poetry unit, using the visual simplicity from haiku poems, and using metaphors and similes to express personal feelings.

Here are the results:

Hong Kong
by Hannah Chan 5H

In the crowded markets, colors collide,

Voices rise like waves on a bustling shore,

Steam from dumplings, a fragrant embrace,

Each bite, a story, a memory made.

Hong Kong Markets
by Triton Ng 5D

A busy and fully crowded market

Customers getting a wet pig head

Fishie gills filled with bills

Crowded stores selling boars

Sellers crying out like chickens

A scent of animals and fresh vegetables

A busy and jam-packed market

Buyers purchasing wagyu

Crabs shells filled with bells

Laughing shoppers carrying stuffed bags

Full of carrots and broccoli

Sauntering out of the market

7 Eleven by Travis Tsoi 6C

Joyfully sprinting classmates,
their eyes glued to their phones,
chatting with the utmost joy,
Buying noodles, ice, anything that’s cheap,
before their tutoring session

Hong Kong’s Famous Chaa Chan Teng
by Hailey Wong 6E

Strolling through the bustling streets

Sparkling with neon lights.

The smell of egg tarts wafting through the air

My grumbling tummy leads me there.

Fish Ball Soup
by Nathan Yam 4F

White as snow rabbits
Scallions more than cactus’s thorns
floating about
in the cat-patterned bowl.
My dad and I eat
around the dark corner
in our local stall
Behind red and yellow tile walls
Where once Dad and I agreed
they’re our two favourite colors.
