The Monster
By Bernard Ching
Killing the entire army, the enormous Kumcumbar rolled itself back into the sea.
I saw everything. The monster damaged the city. I went to Dad’s room and asked him about Kumcumbar. He said, “It will be okay! Kumcumbar will only attack those who attack her.” Dad is the chief scientist at the Kumcumbar Research Laboratory. He knows everything about Kumcumbar.
Today, Dad and I went to the laboratory. Suddenly Kumcumbar stepped in. She made a big roar and started to destroy the laboratory. All the punches and kicks badly damaged the building and all its radioactive equipment. Bringing the DNA bottle with her, Kucumbar went back to the sea. “We must kill Kumcumbar!” said Dad in tears. “All these years of study are nonsense! We must kill her!”
The next day, Dad quickly found another team from the army to attack Kumcumbar. But Kumcumbar didn’t come. Dad thought she would come the next day, so he asked the army to stand by. But Kumcumbar was nowhere to be found.
On the third day, the army told Dad that they could not stand by forever, and they left. Dad felt helpless. He said, “We can just hide at home now.” On the way home in Dad’s car, I stayed silence. Dad turned on the radio. “Kumcumbar appeared in the city centre but suddenly dropped dead in front of the town hall,” said the reporter. “She was believed to be killed by radiation.”
Dad looked at me; I looked at him. We knew why Kumcumbar died.
